Sexual Positions

Sexual position refers to the ways a couple physically position themselves for sexual intercourse. In theory, there are countless sexual positions. But in fact, most sexual positions are a variation on one of approximately half dozen basic positions.

The most common sexual positions are man-on-top, woman-on-top, side-by-side, and rear-entry. They can all be modified. Let your inventiveness and comfort level determine their choice of positions.

Here is a breakdown of the most common sexual positions:

The Missionary Position
The Missionary Position is the main sexual position for most couples. And there's a reason - it feels so effortless and natural. Each person is lying down, stomach-stomach, face-to-face, the woman lies on her back with her legs spread.

The man-on-top position somewhat limits the ways a man can use his hands to caress his partner, but the woman can use her hands freely to caress the man or stimulate her clitoris.

And just because the missionary is ordinary doesn't mean that it can't be an extraordinary experience. Some of its other benefits are the kissing, touching, and eye-gazing, massaging your partner's neck/back, nibbling the other person's ears, necks or lips.

The downside of the missionary: The man-on-top position somewhat limits the ways a man can use his hands to caress and some women find that the man's weight is uncomfortable and restricts pelvic movement.

Woman on Top
The man lies on his back and the woman lowers herself onto his erect penis. The woman can regulate the depth of penetration of the penis and the rate of thrusting. Because of this it is often recommended for women who are having sex for the first time. This position also allows for maximal indirect stimulation of the clitoris by the penis, and some women reach orgasm more easily when they are on top.

Couples can move their hands more freely to caress each other than in most other positions. They can also see more of each other.

This is a good position for the later months of pregnancy (the belly won't get in the way) and for heavy set men for the same reason. . For the same reason it is a good position for men with large stomachs.

Rear Entry
Rear entry is when the man's penis enters the woman's vagina when she has her back to him. Rear entry intercourse can be done with the woman standing or with the woman on her hands and knees and the man kneeling behind her (often referred to as doggy style). It can also be done with both partners lying on their sides. It is not the same as anal intercourse.

Rear entry allows for deep penetration and vigorous pushing. The man's hands are free to caress the woman and easily reach her clitoris.

The drawbacks are that the penis entering from behind gives very little stimulation to the clitoris. In addition, many couples do not like the lack of face-to-face intimacy. Finally, it is more difficult for the woman to caress the man because she has to reach behind her.

Side by Side
The side-by-side position is having intercourse while both partners lie on their sides facing each other. Partners are free to caress each other and the face to face position allows them to kiss. But pelvic thrusting is difficult when side by side.

This is a particularly good position for people who need to avoid strenuous activity and when the woman is pregnant.

In conclusion...
The sexual position you choose depends on many different factors - physical comfort, inhibitions, and even space and time available.

Whatever choose make sure it meets both the physical and emotional aspects of both partners.
